Here’s your exclusive first look at Templeton Rye‘s new Maple Cask Finish, a small-batch whiskey that owes its sweet flavor notes to time spent aging in maple syrup-soaked barrels.
The Iowa distillery’s inaugural release in its Barrel Finish Series was crafted in collaboration with Wood’s Vermont Syrup Company. Templeton’s team first seasoned 80 empty American oak barrels with tree-tapped maple syrup. Each barrel was then turned daily over a two-month period to ensure the wooden staves were thoroughly steeped with the sweet stuff.
After being drained, the seasoned casks were were refilled with Templeton Straight Rye and left to rest for two months. At the conclusion of this secondary maturation period, the finished expression was bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume.
According to Templeton, their new rye boasts an earthy aroma and flavorful hints of caramel butterscotch and toffee, with the addition of dark chocolate notes acquired during its time in the maple
